High Summer

Raccoon at pond's edge seen on a walk at dusk
(It really wasn't that dark out but that's what the camera captured.)

We trimmed a low hanging branch on the American Linden on the left edge of the picture. It really opened up the view across the river. I've seen Great Blue Herons at the water's edge almost every day this week. They're too skittish to photograph but I'll keep trying.

Woodpeckers continue to frequent the hummingbird feeder, sometimes two at a time, one on either side. When they land and take off, the feeder spins like a carousel. It's great entertainment.

House Wren (Troglodytes aedon), singing
I don't think you can make out the bird is this little video, but his voice is loud and clear.

In farming news, I have a crush on this barn across the road. The fleck above the silos is a Barn Swallow.

I predict a couple hundred cucumbers before the season is over.

The first cuke - almost

Today's lunch:
Homegrown Hickory-Maple-Glazed Green Beans with Facon Bits,
Homegrown Tomato, Veggie Sausage,
Homemade Sweet & Sour Cabbage

I'm learning to love green beans after all. Boiled for just a minute or two, they taste so fresh!

Love the raccoon eyes! Neat shot.

And the barn…and the veggie plate, which is saying something for a carnivore.

Herons are tough—they either allow you to take their photograph or not, but good luck sneaking up on one.

You opened an amusement park for Woodpeckers :) I would love to see that, must be great fun to watch. I keep hearing Woodpeckers in the park down the street, but when I'm there they always seem to be in hiding, very hard to spot them. The Wren video is fantastic, better than any music video.
And your dish looks delicious. If you were a restaurant I would not hesitate to book a table!

Jain...I have woodpeckers at the hummingbird feeders too...this is the first year for it to happen...we are almost vegetarians ourselves...we do eat fish and chicken breast meat...Hope you get all those cucumbers...and hope the raccoon leaves your garden alone!

Scribe, thanks for good words!
I think of your magnificent heron shots whenever I try to "catch" one. I suspect yours are more trusting and cooperative than mine. Or perhaps I should give all the credit to the photographer.

Red Robin, the amusement park description is perfect. I just looked up woodpeckers in your part of the world and you have some handsome ones! I thought you might like the wrensong.
If you ever stop by my 'restaurant,' you'll get you the best window seat!

Wanda, interesting about the 'peckers at the hummer feeders - it's the first time we've seen it, too. I hope they'll know what to do when we take the feeders down in the fall. We have a LOT of raccoons here but they haven't raided the garden (yet). I think the dogs and the security light keep them at bay.

It all looks so good. Thank you for sharing.

I had Woody WP at the feeder, they are so much fun. I did a winter video of it.

I have had to put away the feeders due to the bears. So sad.

I had a bit of a disaster with my zukes and the muskrat, but it is only for fun that I grow things...really.

It's a wonderful video, Jenn! We stopped feeding the birds temporarily, too, due to masked bears (raccoons) destroying the feeders every night. Oh, what I'd give to live in a place wild enough to support black bears! I've fantasized about it for years. As for the bird seed, I think there's plenty of wild food available to them this time of year.

I am so tempted to go out and buy a hummingbird feeder, just to see if I could lure in our Three-toed Woodpecker. I guess I will see him soon enough when I put the feed back out.

You really can't lose: if you don't get a Three-toed, you might get a hummingbird!
