Late Summer Gardening

Dawn from the Corn-er

Mosquitos are terrible. They're not always this bad--last summer was pleasant enough. Going outside now is like being in a horror flic. I tried my bugshirt but it was hot so I'm back indoors.

38 Days till the First Frost!

It was dry the past week and I hoped a short drought would dry their breeding grounds. Rain came this morning.

I dash in and out to gather herbs from the garden.
Clockwise from left: chives, Italian parsley, sage, thyme, oregano

Beans, peas, and cucumbers are long gone. Fall plantings are coming up now.
Baby spinach

Baby turnips

Basil
I make a little batch of pesto every week or two and the freezer is on its way to being stocked.

Curly Parsley
I grew enough last year to dry and I'm just now running low - it feels like a great accomplishment to a first-time gardener. This year's crop should be plenty for the coming year, too. Hooray for parsley!

Fall Radishes

Rosemary

The flowers in pots crapped out pretty quickly--either I'm a bad gardener or a victim of botanical planned obsolescence. It worked out fine, though, since I did a late planting of greens in the pots.
Leaf lettuce

Mesclun mix

Join me for a walk down the driveway? The evening 'skeeters aren't out quite yet.

Your garden did very well and now a late summer planting too...the video was clever Jain...I liked how the sunset just slowly focused into view...The trees obscure my sunset in the summer.

How do you keep your herbs looking so fresh? Mine look very withered compared to yours.
I wouldn't mind joining you on that walk down the drive every evening, such a beautiful sunset :)

Wanda, the tomatoes have done poorly due to the cool season but I was pretty happy with everything else. We have to walk the driveway to see the sun rise or set, too darn many trees!

Red Robin, good soil and lots of rain, I guess. I've noticed that herbs have fewer pests than veggies; if they get a good start, they're pretty much foolproof.

Hi Jain

I liked the walk down the driveway ans was waiting to hear your voice...

Your garden does look wonderful. My posts of tomatoes are nearly pickable...bit the asian salad bolted - lovely flowers though!

What happens to your new veg in the frost...

Happy days

Delwyn, hi! I hope to post more mini walks but Blogger is so fussy! We'll see.
The first hard frost will kill the veggies. The greens and roots should have enough time before harvesting.
I'm looking at plans for coldframes to extend the season but probably won't get one built before first frost. Hopefully I'll be able to put out some seedlings in the spring, though!
