Oh, the heat and humidity were torture the past few days. A cold front came through Saturday and Sunday and brought 2” (5+ cm) of rain and slightly cooler temps so I hope to get outside again. . . one day soon.

While tearing out all of the "slow to bolt" lettuce that bolted in the heat, I found several Swallowtail Caterpillars (Papilio polyxenes) munching on the carrot and dill leaves.

Wind snapped some of the new green beans, and flattened the dill, cosmos, and zinnias. The cucumbers are doing fine, though.

This is my second batch of sweet and sour refrigerator cucumbers. Easy, delicious, and nutritious, the recipe is based on this one + garlic - some sugar + mustard seed.

My office mates and I drove to Ohio’s north coast on Thursday for a meeting, after which there was a bit of time to play. As Erie beaches go, Headlands Beach was a nice one, with nearly a mile of sand. The water was clearer than I expected

and we explored the pebble beach leading to the lighthouse.

There was a stand of impressively large Cottonwoods along the shore, and a typical Ohio shoreline image of

a sailboat with the belching Perry nuclear power plant on the horizon. The plant was temporarily shut down in May of this year when its emergency shutdown system failed. Geez, can't we just go solar?

* This post is brought to you without the benefit of the [letter between J and L] to emphasize the importance of using great care while using a mandoline to slice cucumbers. Yes, the blade really is as sharp as they warn and typing without one's middle right finger is a painful nuisance.

Wonderful image of the cottonwood, Jain. The beach at Mentor Headlands is much, much nicer than the pebbly beach near the lighthouse, though. There's real sand for sunbathing at Mentor Headlands. The same cold front came through my stretch of the Mid-Atlantic on Sunday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. with torrential rain, lightning, and thunder for about 45 minutes, then clear skies and lower humidity. I almost passed out as I worked in my garden on Sunday morning before the front moved through. I'm getting tomatoes!

Glad you liked the cottonwood, Scott. I've not been to Mentor Headlands, I'll check it out one day. Hooray for your tomatoes! My grape tomatoes are doing fine but it will be a couple more days for the "real" ones - can't wait!

Love your pictures. Your slicing incident is bringing back bad memories of a similar cutting accident in my kitchen but it required a trip to the ER and several stitches on my thumb.

Thanks, Judy! Yeah, the kitchen can be a treacherous place, not just slices and stitches but some burns, too. Owie!

It's had been HOT and HUMID here too Jain...keeping me inside except for the early mornings. Sorry about the finger. I once cut my forefinger with scissors, making Easter baskets for the grandkids..6 stitches...plastic wrap does not cut well with scissors, but with my impatience finger did.
