Summer, still

Days are still hot but evenings are cooling, enough for steam to rise on the river in the morning.

A Red Squirrel-chewed Black Walnut found on the front deck railing. This appears to be a nut from last year.

I never tire of looking at the front yard.
It was once a grassy lawn, until we planted trees, shrubs, and wildflowers, and allowed native plants to come in on their own.

The large tree in the left background is a tall Tulip Poplar. When it was young, it was small enough for Karma, the German Shepherd, to bite it clean off. Karma loved sticks and it didn't matter if they had roots or not. The tree on the right is a Kentucky Coffeetree that we bought from a nursery and planted ourselves. O did a lot of digging, and I hauled a lot of water buckets, back in the day.

Doll's Eyes are in the foreground (mosquitoes were too bad to get a clean shot of the berries; I'll try again next week) and the Mayapple patch, now done for the season, is bottom right.

The Coffeetree again, on the left, then a spindly Fringe Tree, front center, and a transplanted Pin Oak on the right, along the front path to the river.

A yard once fit only for ball-throwing-to-dogs (not such a bad purpose) is now home for birds, bugs, butterflies, and snakes. And it only took a few years, really.

I'm glad (in a sense) that you're besieged by mosquitoes, too, Jain. Here at my place in the Mid-Atlantic, I can't stand outside for one minute without getting one or more bites on my legs and ankles. It's horrendous. I'm only glad that I'm not the only one suffering through this summer.

Scott, so sorry to hear you're bedeviled, too! I guess there is some small comfort in knowing that I'm not the only victim.

We named our place in Indiana Coffeetree Bottoms due to the plethora of coffeetrees and the rich bottomland. I love those coffeetrees! The seeds are so beautiful.

Aren't you glad to know you aren't friends with a criminal? :)

Hope all is well for you. jak

jak, it's nice to know other Coffeetree lovers! The trees are uncommon in these parts and most folks haven't made their acquaintance.

Actually, some of my best friends are criminals but I won't hold your clean status against you. Big Congratulations on your new gig! I knew you were a shoo-in all along.

All's well here and I hope we'll still have a chance to visit in cubeville from time to time.

I may be a loyal reader, but somehow I missed this post, Jain. I love your front yard, bankside and critters. I wouldn't have much to blog about, if I didn't have some of the same!
