February 22, 2009

20 years ago, when O bought this place, it was inconceivable that there would be Bald Eagles here. We used to drive to Killdeer Plains to scope the nest there, and I took nieces and nephews, thinking it might be their only chance to see them. I saw 3 adults on my drive home Friday, and O snapped this immature, perched over the river, the same day.
When I think of how hopeless and dismal the environmental situation is, sometimes the resurgence of eagles gives me a flicker of hope.

Through the kitchen window this week, a Red Squirrel sits on the nut shelf, Canada Geese hug the far bank, and a Fox Squirrel makes her way down the Witch Hazel in the right center foreground.

In gardening news, seeds are ordered: cuke, lettuce, pepper, radish, turnip, tomato, nasturtium, bergamot, more tomato, basil, spinach, rosemary, more tomato, more lettuce, parsley, and not-one-but-three marigolds! At this point, it looks unlikely that Spring, then Summer, will ever arrive, but we're keepin' the faith.

Eagles! What a treasure.

A decade or two ago such a thing would have been unthinkable. Now, they are returning—and not just to the lands along Lake Erie or the Scioto Valley, but even into the middle of the state. There are four—two adults, two immatures—only a few miles from here, and the older birds are building a nest! Another pair is nest building perhaps 25 miles to the south. Maybe one day I'll have an eagle here, fishing "my" river.

Good post!

It appears you have the habitat for them so good luck!
