An Unusual Hummer

I was under the mistaken impression that Red-throateds were the only hummingbirds east of the Mississippi.

Oh,Hummingbirds, don't you just love them? We don't have them in Holland but I saw lots during a stay in Guatemala. Must be wonderful to have them in your own garden!

That is hilarious!!!! We've had ants and wasps, but none of this species of bird!

That looks like a woodpecker with a drinking problem to me!

ah yes,.........the elusive Eastern Black and White Hummerpecker.
Very rare and it seems to be in breeding plumage.

Now I know what they are selling all those Hummingbird feeders for at Fred Meyer in Fairbanks. No Hummingbirds, but plenty of Woodpeckers at our house. Knowing our luck we would probably attract a much larger species like Ursus arctos horribills (Grizzly Bear).
