A Nippy Year-End

It's been cold. Not brutally, frigidly, sub-zero cold, but uncomfortably, wind-chilly, numb photo-fingers cold. I spent most of the weekend inside baking bread, more sourdough loaves and

North central Ohio was spared (or denied) stormy weather that hit much of the eastern U.S., but it's been cloudy since the Solstice. The sun finally, blessedly, mercifully came out this afternoon and I crept outside.

Beaver has been back.
S/He took a few more nibbles and appears to have been thwarted by a good-sized Poison Ivy vine. Do you suppose they're susceptible to ivy's urushiol?

It appears that someone has been camping in a nest box. I stood on tippy toes to try to get a look inside, but couldn't get close enough for an i.d. It's most likely a Screech Owl.

Bald Cypress knees
Experts are unsure of the reason the trees form these knees; it may be to help provide oxygen, or maybe to help in anchoring the trees in typically swampy soil.

Persimmons persist.

The sun brought long shadows to the river.

And this marks the final weekly picture for 2010 (see sidebar for a year of photos on the Scioto River). The year was both greener and snowier than 2009. I'm unsure where 2011 shots will be taken but it's a habit now so I'll figure something out.

Best wishes for a happy new year!
