Wonderland

O took a walk Saturday and came back excited.
A Beaver has been frequenting the North End.

S/He methodically chewed through the bark and cambium of a large Hackberry tree. But no deeper, which suggests this is a food source instead of the beginning of a construction project.

A smaller tree nearby, with older chews, has the same pattern as this one: the trunk is stripped halfway around, on the uphill side.

I wonder if they know exactly how much chewing they can get away with without killing the tree. We'll keep a close eye on this one!

Rain fell the first part of the weekend,
then turned to snow.

Capo and Lily watched it fall.

It was wet and heavy and clung to every twig.

Buttonbush around the Pond looks lacy.

The river is trying to freeze.

Beautiful images, but keep the snow with you, please. The rain stopped here without turning into anything frozen, for which I am grateful.

Congratulations on your beaver, too! You may remember that we had a beaver migrate to our stream last summer, but a sociopath (no kidding) shot it with an arrow. May yours have much better luck than ours.

The paws had me confused but I think I figured out that the one in the middle belongs to the dog on the left. Is that right? Correct?

Congrats on your snow and beaver.

...really enjoyed this post! It's interesting about the beavers and the bark. Everything looks beautiful in the snow.

Isn't the snow beautiful...transforms everything. Beavers amaze me!

I reckon those Beavers know exactly what they are doing. Be interested to learn what other evidence you find Jain.
The snowy scenery looks so crisp and clean but I'm glad ours has disappeared ... well for the moment. Cheers FAB.

Scott, I’ll keep the snow, thanks, I love it!
I seem to recall skipping over your sociopath story, so disturbing. Our Beaver’s biggest threat will be traffic. I hope s/he keeps to the river, rather than the road.

greentangle, yes, their paws are crossed. They’re quite cuddly with one another. . . when she’s not kicking his @ss. There’s a scar on Lily’s left ear here; she had him pinned on his back, spinning him around, no doubt, and sent him home, humiliated and ashamed. Once in a great while, he gets the last word. I can’t wait till they mature a bit and I can put the Betadine and Neosporin back in the cupboard.

Thanks, Wanda and Kelly! Snow makes everything so beautiful, it’s the great equalizer. Grungy cities, muddy yards, brown and gray landscapes, all look stunning under a white blanket.

Frank, yes, I trust in the Beavers’ wisdom. I’ll report back if and when there’s more activity. Cheers!
