58 Species

That's how many species of mosquitoes call Ohio home. Each species has its own life cycle and season. I believe I have identified 3 of them.

Coquillettidia dullardii: Spring into Early Summer. It takes the Dullards a full 10 minutes to discover there's fresh blood for the taking. Take advantage of this short window to enjoy the great outdoors.

Aedes efficientsis: Mid-Summer. The Efficients hover 'round the door in great numbers and attack as soon as one exits. Going outside at this point is pretty much out of the question.

Psorophora surreptitiii: Late Summer. Our first cool day arrived this week, with low humidity and clean, [dare I say?] crisp air. Ahhh....
I blissfully worked in the garden in a t-shirt and jeans for a full half hour or more, amazed, astounded, and astonished that I wasn't being bitten. The next day, I discovered a dozen dime-sized, angry, swollen, itchy, red welts on my back.

So. Things seem to be getting worse as the season progresses. What will Early Autumn bring?

64 days till the first frost.

HI Jain...How dare you mention frost lol
Amazingly the Mosquitoes have not been bad right where I am, but they are here, and in some places they are vicious...I have a rain barrel to water plants with, and today I notice the buggers swimming about getting ready to hit the air ! grrr
Good info I didn't realize there was more than just "the Mosquitoe"

Jokingly here in Maine we call it the Maine State Bird ; }}

Grammie G should put some mosquito "dunks" in her rain barrel water garden. I have an old spring house on the property here. Usually it's dry, but this year it's held water. Imagine my intense disgust when I found it a soup of swimmers! Out came the dunks. It hasn't seemed to help much, though.

Gee, somehow I feel better now. We only have 35 species in the whole state of Alaska. Certainly not all of them can reside in Fairbanks.
I still got bit last night though and will continue to until there is snow on the ground!

Me, too! There's an especially hungry species out right now. I really can't go outside at all. And when I do, they follow me indoors. Enough, already!
