Frozen, Unfrozen

Bald Cypress knees at the Pond

The Pond, nearly frozen

January harvest
The homemade greenhouse is working. Several nights were in the teens but turnips and turnip greens came through just fine. They easily pulled from soft dirt while uncovered carrots were frozen solidly into the ground.

Your January harvest is impressive, Jain...I have green onions doing well, but it hasn't been very cold here this winter. Love the photo of the graceful swirl of the ice... looks like a carved path!

Well protected, shallow ponds are frozen here—barely—but I've not seen even a backwater pool iced over along the river. Daffodils are now 5-6 inches high, tulips are starting to come up. Not all that many birds at the feeders. I'm good with the lower heating bills, but not good with the lack of winter.

Man, I love turnip greens…and you know turnip is a chief ingredient in many traditional U.P. pasty (the food, not the, uh, teensy bit of adhesive-backed clothing) recipes.

Finally, how come you have bald cypress up there? I thought its extreme northern native range was in southern Indiana?

Bald cypress in north-central Ohio? Wow! I felt like I was back in Florida--except for the ice, of course.

Thanks, Grace and Wanda. I thought the swirl looked like a path, too.

Grizz, daffodils and tulips, oh my! I’m afraid we’ve seen the end of “normal” weather in our lifetimes.
Funny, when I see the word “pasty” now, I think of it with a short “a,” rather than with sequins.
Yes, we’re north of the natural range of Bald Cypress but when O bought the place and developed his love of trees, he bought, swapped, and poached some not-quite-native ones. They’re doing well here.

Scott, along with the Floridian trees, we have some from far northern Michigan, too. It’s why we call this place the Arboretum.

Jennifer and Steve, I might send some home with you. Frankly, they gag me.
