Bold Skunk

We're temporarily letting some of the black oil and suet feeders go dry because Raccoons are cleaning them out nightly. It's an opportunity for Red Squirrels, Chipmunks, and bird scavengers to clean up all the fallen seed on the ground -- thanks, guys!

The Skunk from the other day returned, in broad daylight, and we noticed she was missing her right rear leg and had some issues with her fur. Poor thing, we set out a can of dog food for her, under the front deck where she'd retreated. (Update: an hour later, the plate of food had been dragged out of sight.)
(I got within a couple feet of her and she didn't acknowledge me!)

A Mink walked the bank this morning, not sleek and swift, but fat and waddle-y. We imagine she's pregnant. Wood Ducks arrived this week.

It's cold, windy, blustery, with single-digit (F) temps predicted tonight. We're tired of the cold and all the brown and of being trapped inside.

I've given up worrying about the feeders! Everyone has their own feeder these days: squirrels, woodpeckers, chickadees, while the blue jays have a bucket of peanuts!

Be careful with the skunk! We had one under our porch in our old house. You could smell it through the basement and the cement wall!

Oh, we're happy to feed the 'coons--and we do--but when we have to contemplate getting second jobs to support them... well, something's gotta give.

Amazing how potent skunk scent is, eh?
