I saw my first garter snake about three weeks ago at my BACK door. What is it about doors and garter snakes do you think?

Also, the first hummingbirds of the season appeared here Friday.

Nice wildflowers. Be sure and take a doll's eyes shot this fall.

P.S. Nice award!:-)))

The slabs at doors hold heat, I think.

The first female h'bird arrived this weekend.

Thank you! I plan to shoot doll's eyes when they appear. Last year, they were shrivelly, not too photogenic.

And it's a magnificent award, to be sure!

Actually, I suspect the garter snakes may have a hibernaculum under the foundation of this stone cottage. In the fall, I'll often see a half-dozen snakes at the same time around a certain portion of the wall. Under the floor is—so I've been told—about 12 inches of concrete. The building has been here since 1919. The place where I saw this most recent snake was to the rear, away from the river, and as I was installing a big new planting bed, I'd dug down 4–5 inches when the snake appeared right against the foundation.

You are so kind to share! I have been busy with a palliative care client. Still recovering...catching up now.

Happy spring.
