Bark

The bark of the Butternut tree at the pond is showing some character, with distinctive cracks, moss and lichen.

A poor Blue Dogwood has sustained some damage from a poor deer with itchy antlers. The stem will probably be okay and there are plenty of others he can't get to.

Old woodpecker holes in a decrepit peach snag catch my eye whenever I walk past the living room window.

Reflective bark

Both of our massive Sycamores are schoolmarms, defined by the Society of American Foresters as trees that initially had a single trunk that later divided into two.

Witch Hazel bark with flowers and one of last year's pods. This isn't the witch just outside the kitchen window, which hasn't begun to flower yet, but one down the path that I'd completely forgotten about.

Continuing on the theme of bark, Bankside has had a request for more dog pictures.

After the initial excitement of new! puppies! wore off, we decided it probably wasn't a good idea to let them into bed. Hazel is fine sleeping on a rug and Lily learned quickly that the floor was for sleeping, but Capo's a little slower catching on. No, not slow. Stubborn.

But we kind of missed sleeping with them so decided to have a dog slumber party. An air mattress on the living room floor, an old quilt, and we were ready.
That's Hazel on the floor, Lily on the pillow, and Capo, who burrowed under the covers from the head to the foot and sleeps with his snout sticking out. Oh, and a rare photo of your blogger. We spent most of the night laughing at Capo and needed naps the next day.

Two things are new for me... tree schoolmarms and dog slumber parties! So I guess any tree can be a schoolmarm...we have at least one tree that qualifies, I believe.

Love the tree pictures. I could spend all day taking pics of them, but not sure what I would do with them. Are those spoiled dogs or what? They must have been excited about the party.

haha! Loved Capo's little snout peeking out from under the blankets. Also loved the post on bark...I'm always studying it too...especially when it's coated with moss and lichens.

Canine slumber party! Too cute. And it looks like a boatload of fun.

Oh, and schoolmarm. Never heard of it before. Thanks for teaching this old dog a new trick--er, uh, new term I mean.

Thanks, All! It was a madcap week of cooking not-turkeys and visiting outlaws (like inlaws, but more fun).

I first heard the term "schoolmarm" 20 years ago from an environmentalist friend. I thought it a bit crass at the time. Now that I know foresters use it, well, I know it's crass. But descriptive!

And, yes, the dogs are spoiled. But they all had rough lives before they found us and deserve every bit of spoiling we can give them.

XO!
