Snake Baby

O got a nice catch with the camera on Friday – a Midland Brown (we think) Snake, possibly a newborn since he saw a larger one nearby who may have been coiled over some others. Reptiles aren’t known for their maternal habits, and Browns give birth to live young (as opposed to eggs), so to see a wee one next to an adult would indicate a recent birth, methinks.

He also found several Black Walnut caches in the front yard. Walnuts failed last summer due to the drought so the Red Squirrels must be pretty delighted with this year’s bumper crop. It must have been a lot of hard labour for such petite squirrels to move so many honkin’ large nuts. Me, I’m hoping all this food storage indicates a brutal winter in the near future.

Today was the last T-shirt day of the last T-shirt weekend so we took the old canoe out for a paddle. We nearly made it to Green Camp but were thwarted by low water. We ran aground once but managed to scoonch our way out. Still, it was a fun and pretty trip, with the leaves just turning and Wood Ducks around nearly every bend.
