Ode to a Persimmon

We shook and shook the 'simmon tree
but nothing hit the earth
till finally we heard a thud
We smiled and laughed with mirth

Its fall was brutal, harsh, and hard
'twas 20 feet or greater
It had survived both drought and flood,
frost, freeze, and snow came later

We looked amongst the fallen leaves
for fruit so orange and tender
till our eyes upon it fell
the glisten and the splendor

We took it in and tried to cut
the squishy thing in two
It turned to mush within our hands
t'was nothing we could do

I'd like to tell you of the taste,
the texture, scent, and feel
but words cannot describe this thing
that makes a grown man squeal

A dozen more or maybe two
still hang upon the tree
but beasts shall feast upon the treats
not meant for you and me
