April 12, 2009

We took a walk in the Woods and found several nice patches of Wild Leeks.

I brought home some of last year's seeds and scattered them in our wildflower garden.

Thursday's rain watered the Swamp.

Mayapples are up! Could these serve any purpose except as fairie umbrellas?

Flowering Spicebush

Back at the house, Tamaracks are leafing out. Or are they needling out? Deciduous conifers can be so confusing!

The view through the window should be turning green soon.

I have always liked to find mayapples just poking up from the duff—they are like little umbrellas, still tightly wound.

Do you ever make spicebush tea?

No, do tell about spicebush tea!

Sorry to be slow in reply…

You can make spicebush tea (and it is delicious) from the twigs, leaves, tips, or bark. Just gather a handful of whichever and steep. It has long been a widely enjoyed tea plant, almost as popular as sassafras. I keep dried spicebush leaves in jars for winter teas; my late friend Frank kept both twigs and/or leaves.

Great! I shall try some as soon as the leaves come out!
