April 26, 2009

There were a slew of Canada Geese on the river in late winter but a particularly territorial pair drove the others away the last few weeks. We were delighted to watch the couple take Junior on a tour today. The Secret Service could get protection tips from this pair -- look at that formation.

Three consecutive 80F/27C days really brought the green out;

and the yellow,

American Goldfinches

and the blue.

Indigo Bunting

The Mayapples in the front yard are coming along nicely.

Trout Lilies have popped up in the old apple orchard.

Solomon's Plume, below, more commonly goes by the name of False Solomon's Seal. I've probably ranted this rant before, but naming plants and animals "false" and "lesser" and "common" shows a real lack of imagination, not to mention downright disrespect. Drives me crazy.

Now what's "false" about this?

Great flowers…and love the geese family. I've seen no young—ducks or geese—here along the river yet.

I'm with you on the "greater" "lesser" "false" business, but then…we weren't consulted when the names were chosen. So those unimaginative, lazy, botanical bureaucrats got to pick 'em. DRAT IT!

Ah, not just botanical but avian, too... "Common" Raven? "Lesser" Scaup? "Common" Loon?! Puh-lease.

Woodies and Mallards are paired up and we're waiting to see ducklings, but evidently eggs are still being sat upon.

Thanks, Jenn! Springtime really is the best, isn't it?

I can't believe all the amazing flowers that are blooming I assume on your property (I have to read back more to figure that out. And the colorful birds -- three in that one tree!

I am a huge fan of geese... is this mating pair returning from a previous year? Do they typically only have one chick?
